We Buy Any Car Quote?

OH has been on the site this morning and got a quote for our 12 year old Punto, we bought it for £400 in January, and they have quoted us £195 for it now

It started dying in June (eating the petrol) and we have a baby on the way and thought it was time to buy a newer car, so we went to the garage and bought a 2007 Reg Bravo.

We didnt trade it in as as the time I was going to learn to drive in the punto (we have since realised we cannot affrod to run two cars) and the garage only offered us £100 at the time

We now think we may as well sell it cos arent going to use it, and we can claim some tax back and some insurance (hopefully, we paid a year ahead in June)

Is £195 a fair quote? I know you probably cant tell me exactly lol

Just OH thinks we would get more selling it private, but I just think it would be a lot less hassle if we sold it via this method?

Well, we were "quoted" £275 for our old car and all they would offer on the day was £125 after inspection. All our answers were accurate, but they insisted that it was in worse condition than we had described. We sold it on Gumtree for £250 in the end.

So just be aware, what they quote you online is not neccessarily what you'll get when you drive all that way to sell it, and it's really hard not just to say okay just to save hassle, but they are ripping people off. They do buy any car, but not at the price they initially offer.

How long is the MOT? If short MOT that will be about all you will get. If close to 12 months then you might get £300-£400. But you say it is dying, so might be just a scrapper.

Don't expect to get what they have quoted you though, they haven't seen it yet.

Yes..i went on their website just for a laugh. they quoted me £50 for my 17 year old Mk3 Golf. ROTFL.

Dont expect them to give you a good deal. they want to buy your car cheap then sell it on at a profit.

If your selling then ebay it or sell privately.
Your time to maximise the value for the punto was when you traded it in. The £100 was an opening gamibt by the dealer and he would have gone higher.

    Sell it privately.
  • I used to sell second hand cars, and Puntos were the best sellers. Any advert I placed for a punto guaranteed at least 6 times as many calls as any other car.

Whats the year/mileage/number of doors/spec eg power steering etc../rust or dents/MOT/tax/any service history etc...

If I ever got a punto, I was over the moon - I used to drive 200 miles just for a punto !

You may well get more selling privately but its a PITA to be honest... loads of timewasters, loads of people wanting to bargain you down to £0, the costs of advertising and all the time you waste its sitting there running down the MOT and Tax.

To be honest I would do one of two things...

    1. If they really will give you £195 for it then i'd snap their hand off. £205 for 9 months motoring is very good. Even if they looked and said they'd only give you £150 or maybe even £100 then i'd probably still go for that...

    2. Failing that, I would stick it on ebay but its obviously a risk, you could get less... especially since you admit it is "dying". Best I think you could do is sell it as "spares or repairs" or at minimum "in need of attention" to cover yourself

Oh forgot option 3 if none of the above suit.. then scrap it... you should get at least £50

I guess that there is not much of a resale market for 17 year old Golfs then, after all they are a business.

They would presumably then scrap it and pocket the difference. Even Carcraft would struggle to shift that one.

It really wasn't he wasnt going any higher than £100 we tried, and back then we wanted to use it for other things and def didnt think £100 was worth it.
