Worried about Barclaycard taking money from bank account

I have a Barclays account & had a Barclaycard before opening the bank account which I got into difficulty with & have been on a repayment plan for a few years. Always made my payments each month to the debt recovery agents on behalf of Barclaycard. I recently had heart surgery and received no money whilst awaiting benefits from DWP after supplying a medical certificate. I wrote to the debt collection people explaining my situation and that at present could not make the monthly payment. I had flu last week needing antibiotics from the doctors & just checked my online banking this week to find the DWP had made a payment into my Barclays bank but Barclaycard had taken over £200 from my Barclays account so leaving me in financial difficulty.
I have spoken to several staff to do with Barclays & was told they were within their right to take the money. I explained my situation & was told they would see about putting the money back into my account but a few days later nothing has happened. Can they legally do this as this was benefit money which the law says I need to live on. I am on my own with a daughter to support & this has put me in a worrying situation.

Would appreciate advice from anyone please?
