reclaimed charges against Debts with DCA's

i maybe completely wrong with this,

We have just had £270 of charges returned from a halifax credit card, now the actual debt is £1100 and with capquest, as halifax have said they shouldn't have charged us so much for charges and refunded us the money should the debt actually be £270 less than what it is, as those charges shouldn't have been put on there in the first place??

same goes for barclays, had 2 accounts with a £400 over draft on each, both got up to around the £800 mark with charges on top (now with lowell), but over the course of a few years we are actually claiming over 2k charges on each, we had a £1900 interim hardship payment across both a few months ago

so if the charges are unlawful surely we should just owe £400 on each account as that was actual money we had off them, the extra charges shouldn't be on there anymore as barclays have said they shouldn't have put them on there by giving a refund.

so by paying these debts in full are we not just paying the charges all over again??

    How was the charges returned?

Why is it still with lowell if they have paid out on financial hardship?
