Cheapest train Reading to Aberystwth day return

I have to take my 19 year old to Aberystwyth for the day on Saturday 17th October.

We will have to leave Reading at 06.10 and change in Wolverhampton arriving in Aber at about 11.26am

Return will be 17.30 again changing in Wolverhampton.

I can only find fares of £60.40 each. Are there any cheaper?

If not I'll drive as I can't afford the train.

Thanks

Does your 19 year old have any sort of railcard? Valid from 18 - 25 (26 if renewed before 26th birthday).

At such short notice you are unlikely to get the cheapest fares now.

Cheapest return fare is £60.20 each. Change at Wolvehehampton on the way there and change at Birmingham International on the way back.

I have check 2 single journey and nothing cheaper. You may be best booking the £60.40 if they are available. The run from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth is very nice through the Welsh countryside.
  • Thanks - she has no rail card - we are going to an open day at Aberystwyth University.
I could find nothing cheaper either so I will do it in the car rather than spend £120.80.

    Thanks

I am going with my daughter too.

We live about 80 miles away so I have been requested to drive as the cost of the fuel is cheaper than the train fair for both of us!
  • Mine is going for Fine Art. Safe journey.

I saw some mention in some Aberystwyth blurb about getting travel back for visiting days and interviews, can this be so - or have I read something that applies to people applying for jobs?

I have seen somwhere that if they are applying for a placement in university from the ucas site you can claim up to £50 travel expenses but dont ask where it was!

If anybody is going by train, make sure you sit in the 2 front carriages before it gets to Machynlleth. When it gets to Machynlleth the train splits, and all the people going to Aber who are sitting in the rear 2 carriages have to move forward. On open day unless you have a seat by then you will be standing for 20 miles!
