I'm starting nursing this year but applied ages ago. I'm in Scotland so not sure if it works same way as England but here the courses are really limited. I was interviewed even though they had no places left so have been waiting a year already!
You can find out about clearing through ucas website. Also quite a few uni's have two entry dates (extra one in January.)
Best idea might be for your daughter to apply again but make sure application is in as soon as they'll take them.
Good luck0 -
Hi
Has she rung the uni for feedback on her application? Each uni vary in their criteria, some will take people on without experience others won't.
If she's applied for the diploma it'll be NMAS not UCAS.
Tell her to check this site out for oodles of advice on her application: http://com2.runboard.com/bstudentnurse
The places on nursing courses can be highly sought after and many people have to wait for a long time to get onto the course of their choice. Tell her to keep trying if it's really what she wants.
I'm coming to the end of my first year btw.0 -
They do like experience. They don't want students who, at the first sight of blood and bedpans, go "ewwwwwwwwww" and never come back again.
Old people's homes are good place to try. Even just handing out tea involves some talking to the patients and can help build a bedside manner. Hospitals sometimes need volunteers. Even a first aid course would be better than nothing!
There are still a lot of courses on UCAS Extra, but that's for the degree. I don't know about spaces for the diploma.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

If she wants to come along to The Student Room then she'll be more than welcome, and can get lots of advice about Clearing, applying, how to do well in exams etc! You're welcome too, but it is primarily a student site.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

hi
im a student nurse, and they do like experience there are few 18yr olds on my course, but there are some.
i would ask for feedback and also get a part time job or volunteer in a care environment.im child branch and i nannyed for three years, nursery work for a yr and half and then applied so i would have a good chance
tell her good luck from me and dont be disheartened my friend was turned down at 18 and worked for disbaled ppl in there homes, careline or something, and got in the year after0 -
I'm a 28 year old male and I have just been accepted on a nursing diploma to start January 07, really excited about it!!
They really do want experience, mainly because they know that some people have 'ideas' about the job from shows like casualty, holby city etc which in reality don't represent how hard the job is.
I have no care experience, I just showed how enthusiastic I am, that I had done my research, I think that I took my copy of the Royal Marsden Hospital Clinical Nursing Procedures book with me really sold it to them!
That said I do have a job now that involves dealing with blood, vomit etc, lots of drunk people about who can't control themselves!!

I'm not doing nursing, I'm doing midwifery instead - which branch had she applied to, if it's child branch that is really competitive (same as midwifery really) about 30 applicants to every place - so you could have a really good application and just not enough places.
You need to prove that y know what the career involves and that you feel it is for you0
