I have recently bought a B T phone but am told I will have to pay my service provider which is TalkTalk to use caller display. Do all service providers charge for this and /or is it only on B T phones ? Would appreciate any info

BT doesn't charge for caller display.or the answer services

Do you mean the phone is a branded BT phone ?, in which case its no different to a binatone, or panasonic or whatever, its just the 'make' of the phone, its your service provider that either charges or doesnt charge for caller display ( for the exchange to send the data to the phone to allow it to display the callers ID, )
Talk Talk it would appear charge for caller display, not all service providers charge for caller display,0 -

Nobody offers caller display for "Free". If anyone says different they're an idiot, a fool or a saleperson.
TalkTalk do charge but if you join their privacy scheme online (talktalk.co.uk, click on My Account, scroll down and click on Land Line/My Services). Under Privacy Features you'll see "Privacy Pack- Caller display - See who is calling before you answer". Tick it and save the changes.
You'll also see "Free" but we all know it's not really free. You have to be a customer and login etc etc etc.
BT do a similar thing http://www2.bt.com/static/i/btretail/consumer/btprivacy/faqs/index.html0 -

For a while there, Jemma-T, I thought you were going to let this one pass.Nobody offers caller display for "Free". If anyone says different they're an idiot, a fool or a saleperson.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Sipgate provide caller display for free.
You missed the bit: ...if you have a PC, a PC with a good quality microphone and headphones, broadband, leave your 300w PC on burning electricty 24hrs a day (how else do you get/make a call?) or buy a special phone, sign up and do all the faffing about that VOIP asks of your PC.
Yes, VOIP is great if that's your bag but I'd hardly say their caller display is "free".
I'm not knocking companies that offer these services but there's a lot of hoops to jump through and therefore it's not "free". I don't pay for my caller display directly as it's part of my BT package. I wouldn't say it's free though as I pay for that service package.0
