Avast Antivirus stopped working

My avast antivirus has stopped working. I have dowloaded the program and re-entered the program key but it still has a no entry sign in the icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen. does anyone know how to fix this?

Are all your Avst providers running? i.e. have you stopped or paused any? It may abe worth checking by right clicking on the icon and checking to see if the option to "resume provider" is active. If so, resume all services. Hope this helps.

I would also check your PC for viruses using a decent online checker - had AVG runing for a couple of years and then Avast for the last year and found that the 2 combined had let 8 viruses (and over 20 infected files) get through :(

I was recommended http://www.kaspersky.com/ which has a free online scanner (though it cant treat them but does identify where they are for you to treat manually) and a 30 day free trial of the downloaded version (which can treat).

Wouldnt say I am an expert on these things but it certainly has cleared up the problems my PC had and the downloaded version is the most thorough I have ever known. (it is £22/ year which I dont think is bad for the downloaded version)
