I certainly don't condone it but I'd much rather school focused on educating kids rather than social engineering. Who knows then they might actually be smart enough to start asking their parents for healthier meals.0 -
I used to take a trio bar 2 or 3 times a week but the friend I walked to school with his parents banned him from taking chocolate to school so he took to sneaking money out of the house and buying a couple of Mars Bars every day from the shop on the way.
Oh god, how I wish they would bring Trio bars back, this thread has started me thinking about them againIf At First You Don't Succeed, Call It Version 1.00 -
when my son was still at school this policy was introduced. while he as a 16 year old,who was extremely fit and active and ate very little chocolate or sweets apart from the occasional choc biscuit with his packed lunch until the policy started. while his teacher ate chocalate cake in front of him, she was telling him he wasnt allowed his biscuit.the world has gone mad!0

Wow, that is staggeringly bad advice. Either concede or disagree - but for heavens sake don't teach children to eat chocolate when no one is looking!0 -
I think this sort of policing has gone too far.
I have stopped sending my two for school lunch as the 'homemade' options that they harp on about are disgusting (my DD cant eat them and she is not fussy at all and will usually eat anything) they have chips, pizza and burgers - all these I wouldnt even give them at home.
If I want to put a 'treat' in my kids lunch box I will and I would be absolutely furious if someone came along and took it out again! they have plenty of healthy food in there and dont even always eat the treat (when they get one) but that is up to me as a parent not a teacher!
What do they class as chocolate anyway? I often put homemade chocolate buns, flapjack or chocolate crispies in - would they be removed within these 'rules'???0 -

My mum did ... and I am now overweight. I am not solely attributing my weight problem to chocolate, but if you count up all the additional calories over the years, it makes some difference!Gone ... or have I?0 -

Do you know, I head a school, and it would be truly wonderful if we could be left to focus on education - but no, it is now (according to Government directives upon which we are judged) our role to
1. order, manage, dish out and clear up the mess from a Free fruit schemes
2. ensure that children eat a healthy lunch (cooked and or packed)
3. manage, dish out, clear up and take the flack for school milk
4. get them checked for eyesight and weight issues
5. supervise them from 7am to 6pm so parents can work
6. ensure they get enough exercise to counteract the electronic age
..... and so on.
Today I had to fill in a school health form - question 6 "how many teenage pregnancies do you expect to deal with this academic year" ...... I am at a primary school .... am hoping none
Don't get me wrong, I love my job with a passion, but education often seems to be the last thing on my list - God bless the Government and the all their expense claims!DEBT FREE since 2011

Ok I ate all the carp of the day at school both pack lunch and school dinners, didn't do me any harm. Infact I actually preferred the old school dinner days. Yes there might have been 5 unhealthy meals and 2 healthy meals but at least there was a choice! Nowadays it is a set menu - you can either have this or this! Imagine if that was a restaurant?! I do support what the schools are doing with the healthy eating programes but a little but more choice available wouldn't go a miss. There are days where my little one will have school dinners infact it was only the other week she had 3, this week she has had none as there is nothing on the menu that she would like. I do try to make her pack lunch as healthy as possible and the only treat she gets are animal biscuits but most of them come back home as she is full from eating everything else.
The rules surrounding our children are getting a bit extreme IMO and I didn't realise when I had my daughter she came with a parent hand book with a list of do's and dont's from the government! Surely it's just common sense to give your child a healthy meal? But mind you the people who run our country are clearly lacking in common sense!:rolleyes:0 -
I dont blame the school staff - I blame the penpushers in government who take things too far!
actually chocolate isnt unhealthy - dentists prefer it apparently!!! and its used in a lot of school desserts!
I would ask the head why chocolate is banned from lunchboxes and not school dinners (if its on menu).
jeez - if you could have seen DS1s lunchbox - he was a picky eater and tho i could get him to eat a fairly healthy meal at home - he would return with full lunchbox and had nothing to eat if i didnt pack mostly sweet items!0
