Selling a car question????

Not sure where this should go so feel free to move it if its in the wrong place.
My son has just sold a car for spares or repair. It has been off the road since the end of January and we used the sorn thingy that you get with your tax renewal. Now heres the problem............We cant find the log book, I thought It was handed in to the post office when we did the sorn thing. we have the off the road sorn document here and we have given this to the buyer, does anyone know if we would have returned the log book to the dvla????? If so do we need to contact them to tell them the vehicle has been sold??????
