Used car is a dud, what are our rights?

Hi all, I hope I am posting in the right place here!
3 months ago my hubby bought a used car (LPG to save money on fuel) from a dealership. We traded in our old car (which they sold within 2 days and made a handsome profit on) We had the new car a day or 2 and it broke down, they took it in, told us it was fixed, we collected it, had it a day and it broke down again....in total it has been back 4 times and we have actually had the car less than 4 days out of the 3 months. They finally fitted a new(ish) engine last week and hubby collected it on Saturday .....and yes, it broke down within an hour of collecting it so it went straight back! They gave us a gas guzzling volvo to get hubby to work which has cost us a fortune in fuel. Now, i think we have been more than reasonable but enough is enough and I have refused to have that car back on my drive - in my opinion its dangerous and I wont let my kids ride in it. The boss of the dealership has been avoiding dealing with us but hubby managed to speak to him and they ended up having a massive row and he told my husband that he is not entitled to a a different car or a refund (I want the refund, because I dont want to line their pockets). Surely we are entitled to a refund? Can anyone help?
Thanks in anticipation.

Is the car on finance or bought outright?
It's probably worth calling Consumer Direct for advice:

I used them when I bought a duff car and they were extremely helpful.0 -
The car is clearly unfit for purpose. Follow the above advice.0

Hubby says that the boss told him that the car is perfect now, has given a 1 year warranty and complaining about how much he has had to spend on it. He is insisting that we take it. Does this change things?0 -

I think tbh if the car is now running, and you havent had to pay extra to get to this position and they have also given a year warranty additional on it then you should accept it. You dont have much to gain fighting it.
Also if they have kept fixing it and given you the warranty then this seems to be reasonable service.0
