she is currently telling us she wants to give 'some' money to each of our 3 kiddies, so now i have to find out what she is able to gift with out causeing her to 'get into trouble' any ideas what the threshold is?

There isn't one - any gifts above those normal on Birthdays and Christmas could be viewed with suspicion from a deprivation of assets point of view.
