Waste of sandwiches

I'm having a big Halloween party for my son end of this month. It's getting a bit stressful for me so my MIL has stepped in to help and give me a hand.
They have now decided to have sandwiches cut out in Halloween shapes using cutters we got. My only problem with that is the waste of food. It will probably look really good with sandwiches shaped like ghosts, cat, pumpkins, bats....but is there something I can do with the leftover bread (mind you it will be covered in cheese, ham and butter..probably even jam)
Is there a bread and butter pudding perhaps that can have ham & cheese in it

i dont see why you couldn't do a savoury bread and butter pudding, use eggs and milk like a quiche, some extra cheese, herbs, more ham, etc,,,
here you go.. recipe
id leave the jam ones out though .. !0 -
Just use the jam ones in a normal b&b pud, just a jammy one :-)
Yum yum2 angels in heaven :A0 -
Don't forget that you can freeze the leftover bits too. Have a bag for each kind of sandwich (sorry if that is obvious
) and then you don't have to decide what to do with them straight away.
I think bread pudding is the best idea too.0 -
Could you chop the savoury sandwich bits into chunks and pop them on a tray in the oven or under the grill to make mishapen savoury croutes/crouton type things to have with soup?
Do you think it would work to let whack them in the food processor to make a savoury crumb topping for a baked dish?0 -

That's reminded me of a pudding my mum used to make us -fried jam sandwiches with cream. Basically a jam toastie -ooh very hot mind! You could toss the jam bits around in a pan with some butter until crisp then pile into bowls and serve with whipped cream or ice cream.0 -
Great ideas....also you could do HM flat breads and shape into scary shapes with cutters/a knife and keep reshaping dough when at the pre-cooked stage.
Or save the offcuts for breadcrumbs....they always come in handy.
I know exactly how you feel as DS has recently developed a liking for car shaped sarnies (silly me offered them one day).....but am trying to stick to biccies or dough that can be shaped while wet and hence less waste.
hth and enjoy the party.thriftlady wrote: »Ooh, both excellent ideas:T

I remember doing some shaped sandwiches once for a party, only I used the cutter on the bread first, and then made the sandwiches, a bit slower, but I wanted the off-cuts to make bread pudding.0

I agree with Sally. Cut the shapes out first, then fill them. Remember to reduce the amount of filling that you make up as well!Loving the sunny days!0

I would have suggested same as SallyForth - cut bread first into shapes then make up sandwiches.

Cut the sandwiches into "witches fingers" ie long strips with a slice of cherry tomato one end of the savoury ones as a finger nail or a halved glace cherry on the end of sweet ones. All you will waste are the crusts and you can use them in sweet /savoury bread puddings.0
