I have just been to India though and now I want real Indian food, rather than takeaway style;). How I wish I had taken a notebook with me to write down what was in the food we had! Just an excuse to go back;) I have been getting spices from Indian shops since 1989 and would never get supermarket stuff again.

I'm sure most of you savvy OS'ers know this already but in my nearest supermarket (Somerfield) there is a sort of foods-from-around-the-world section where the spices are about a third of the price of the usual brand and supermarket-own spices.
The other day I made an amazing curry I found here.....I'll try and find out where I got it as I need to thank them!
You make your own curry paste and then halfway through cooking the curry itself (veggie) add a paste of charred aubergine blended with coconut milk - fantastic!!!!0 -
I found it! And have to say thanks to Arkonite babe (have pushed the right button!)
Would do a link but have never worked out how! This is the best I can do:

It's the link that says "this one"
I think this is the tastiest home-made curry I've tried!0 -
It also worth mentioning that asian buthcers are half the price of the supermarkets... In the asian shop where I go, just some egs... chicken fillets are £2.99kg compared to 'tesco value' at 5.99kg... 3 small chickens for £4.99, Lamb mince £2.29kg compared to tesco £1.99 for 400g pack... These butchers will also cut your chicken your prefered way all I would recommend would be to make sure you wash it thoroughly...0

Have printed off the base curry recipe and also the Korma one and will give it a go... I wonder how many 'portions' the base curry does? 1Kg onions - phew - needs to do a few portions!MFW #185

From a 1kg base, I've had variable 425ml portions of sauce - as low as 5, as high as 9 - no idea why the variance. Each portion of sauce makes 2-4 portions to serve (or one belly burster for a portly gent like myself on starvation all day ahead of the anticipated curry lol)There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't
In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0 -
