A PSP expert required!!!!

I am thinking of buying a psp. I heard that when people first started to buy psp the older version of the firmware allowed people to download games into their memorycard and play most games for free.

However, apparently if you purchase a psp now, the newer version of the firmware does not allow to play games downloaded to the memorycard and hence stopped people downloading free psp games. Is this true?

But if i buy a new psp now can i not change the new firmware down to the old one? if so, how easy is this to do?

You can downgrade if you get a PSP with v2.0 firmware. Anything higher, v2.01+ and it's not possible.

You can still run homebrew (and I think certain games) with newer firmware versions. It's been a while so I'm not sure what the current status is, but I think anything up to v2.6 is ok using the GTA save game method.

Have a look here, Fanjita is the guy behind a lot of the firmware hacks that have been about. There's plenty of information and guides.

As wolfman says the PSP you want has a software version 1.5 which allows the use of ISO games and homebrew software. there are a few versions that are ok 1.0, 1.5 1.51, 1.52 and 2.0 any after 2.01 cant be downgraded to 1.5. anything other than 1.5 requires upgrading to 2.0 then downgrading to 1.5.

The downgrade process is pretty streight forward and there are loads of sites that tell you what you need and how to do it. and what homebrew software you need after to get the stuff working.

Any PSP you buy in the shops now will be 2.01 or higher they have been this way since before christmas, your best chance of getting the PSP you want is ebay or an import from Japan. you will pay a premium for such a psp but the money that can be saved is worth it.

Some of the new games require 2.01 to play and people work on these to get them to work GTA does but there is a work arround and I play it without problems on my 1.5 PSP some other games havnt been sorted yet. if you buy any of the newer games they are more likley to ask for an update before they will play and that shouldnt be done. I have a load of original games that I cant play but hey they were free from Tesco so Im not bothered.

    good luck in your quest
