Internet security

I have McAfee security on my lappy bought from a high street store and not from a car boot so it's all legit. I Also have windows defender. Now you can see i don't know a great deal about computers but my question is. is this enough security to have for safety when buying or paying bills online.

I buy the odd thing and pay one bill on line and also book two or three hotel breaks in the UK a year.

I'm always looking for the pad lock and the hhttps instead of the www. when i make transactions but I'm still slightly concerned that someone sat on a beech in South Africa for instance is watching what i do.
I was recently advised to down load spybot?? which i did. It then asked if i wanted my computer scanning i clicked no but it did it anyway and it came up with 40 odd threats low risk etc i then felt uneasy with spybot so uninstalled it did a scan with McAfee and it came up as fine no threats nothing.

I have heard of phishing, worms,Trojans etc etc so is my McAfee, windows defender, firewall etc enough protection.

Sorry to sound thick but with more and more companies asking people to pay online it's going to become more worrying if I'm up to date and it makes me wander if I'm up to date why do McAfee sell deluxe versions is that somthing i should think about buying.

Thank you and Regards.

I wouldn't worry about someone sitting in a tree in South Africa, as such!

The general consensus on here is that you can get better free Antivirus (etc.) than McAfee, that will also use less of your computer's processing power.

  • Hiya davetrousers. I did have avg so did my wife on hers but she got loads of trojans and that's why we ditched the freebies and bought McAfee. We got told avg dose not stop Trojans which seemed to be the case
  • I'd search the Techie Forum for free anti virus. I think people favour Avira atm.

I'm a big fan of 'Avast' which is free too.
