Sodium Chlorate - if you can find it, as it was supposedly banned from sale at the end of September 2009. It is highly toxic and can stay in soil for some time (depending on concentration, soil type etc.).

It works and kills everything green plus more if you're not careful.

Sodium Chlorate isn't the best. You need anything with glyphosate in it - one brand name is Roundup, but plenty of other own brand products are available - just check the label.

It will kill anything which is growing and gets into the roots ensuring no regrowth - it's one of the few products which kills Japanese Knotweed.

You will need to treat it a few times before everything is killed off.

I've got lots of 'horsetail' . Is that the right word ?
Will glyphosate get rid of that ?

It may struggle a bit with brambles, look for it in SBK or similar for brushwood, treestumps etc. Roundup should kill just about everything else. Would advise redoing it a few weeks again after soil has been tilled to kill of any seedlings that start to emerge as with years of neglect there will be many seeds from weeds in the soil waiting for ideal conditions to germinate.

It's worth mentioning that some powerful weedkillers will make growing anything else impossible for a while ...use your hands it's cheaper ..better still pay some kids pocketmoney to weed it
