You know that woman who was head of childrens services who got sacked over baby peter

she maintains that she is finacially runied and cant get a job

More like cant get a job where you get perks for failing standards such as a day out at the races, all expenses paid, well poor baby Peter will never have the chance to go to school, or to have any job, or have a day out at the races.
Harringay pay their foster staff peanuts compared to how much it would cost to put them in a special unit, these foster carers work for less than minimum wage after all costs are deducted and they have to save a certain amount a week for the child they look after and buy food for the kid out of the money they are paid!

They pay the same money to a foster carer who is looking after a child with no special needs as they do to a carer who looks after a child 24hours a day often needing medication at odd hours.

Harringay are a waste of time, someone i know works for them, to put a child into local authority care costs them about £1500-£2000 a week, so they would rather the child stay with the parent, she was looking after a little boy whose mum couldnt cope and when the mum visited her son, she was high on drugs, yet they decided to send him back to mum, despite reports being given by the carer

    warning *rant*

You know in London so much of this comes down to care costs. If the british public wasnt so supportive - and Politicians so zealous, of "privatisation of care markets  lots of harm would be avoided.

Im glad you know someone who had the same experience as me ( obviously, in a way) I hoped I was the only person to have experienced that, its something that the Profession does not seem to shout about. Even on message boards of the social work profession Ive never seen a reference to workers who wanted to accommodate but budget says no. I suspected it happened a lot though, but no proof.

The problem haringey - like many other Authorities- finds itself in is that good workers wont go there, many staff burn out ( who looks after the cases while you are on sick leave- no one) , and there is insufficient funding becase the private sector will have you over a barrel. 2k a week - I mean I ask you! Haringey, like many other local authorities are over a barrel to privatised care services "taxpayer, Ill name your price",When I was in social work I couldnt imagine going anywhere else to have a higher caseload, it wasnt humanly possible and I would have inevitably let people down.

I really despiar when I see people who have no knowledge of the profession- and thats what it is- doing down what is arguably one of the most difficult jobs there is, whilst regurgitating something they might have seen in the metro, or on here. Reporting of the Administrative side of this case have been thin on the ground, wellit doesnt make good tv to truly investigate the management chains of a local authority ( zzzzz) but its averting enough to bay for blood.

. I dont see people here queing up to say "she was rubbish at her job I COULD DO IT BETTER" . I also dont see scores of threads doing down the whole police force because an officer attacjked a girl with a baseball bat and on another recent report another officer was said to have raped a women on duty.

    *rant mode off * :)

I wonder how forgiving and understanding people would be of S.S. on this thread if it was their child that was let down by the system and murdered.Methinks you would all be baying for S.S.blood.
Just think, it is only the fact that they are in clink which prevents Baby P's parents from reading this thread and baying for SS's blood because the system had let them down and allowed Baby P to be murdered. Perhaps we should let them out to join in the outrage. After all, for them it is not hypothetical.

  • Ultimately, it is about responsibility. She got paid to accept that responsibility. While she didn't kill baby P, she was responsible for her team failing to stop that he was being abused. It was her duty to ensure that everyone below her was doing their job properly. That's the reason she was paid so much. If she didn't have that responsibility, she'd have been on minimum wage. It's how it works. She needed to go.

I only logged in to say that I feel more sad that these type of inhuman incidents are happening in a developed modern western society. We should all hang our heads in shame. Kids need to be put in care to escape physical abuse from own parents ? I come from a third world country and never heard of any such incidents taking place while I grew up. What is wrong with this country these days ?

You just do not get it, do you? You have no idea of the number of people working for a department like the one SS worked for. You have no idea of the team structure, the managers in charge of those teams, and the duties of the head of Social Services. You also have no idea of the numbers of children and families - the case load, being handled, the complexity of the cases, and the way that the law sometimes prevents Social Services from taking action.
Children are killed and abused nearly every day in the UK,a very shocking and a very sad fact, but do we hear for the head of every Social Services department to be sacked?
The simple facts are, that "Baby P", was systematically tortured and then killed by two very evil people, who knew full well what they were doing. There were many mistakes made, by nearly every authority - Social Services, Police, Hospital.
However the press concentrated on two people - Shoesmith, and the foreign doctor, who was the last professional person to see "Baby P" alive.
Shoesmith had no contact with the family, and was probably not aware of the case, and the doctor, whilst not recognising the injuries, probably would not have been able to save "Baby P". There was barely any criticism of the Police - why?
Our popular press tries to encourage us to look for a scapegoat. Every incident must have a person to blame. The people most to blame in this case are the mother, and the boyfriend who inflicted the damage.
  • To be honest I can't see why anyone would want to be a social worker these days - you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

  • It begs the following question Andygb. What exactly are we getting from these departments, who swallow upwards of 1 million in salary alone, except for people who dont know what the person at the next desk is doing, dead kids they already were aware of and expensive cover-up reports that seem to blame no-one?

The parents were found guilty. I think its totally clear where the blame lay.

  • Bang your head all you like. It doesnt alter the fact that Maria Ward was either too incompetant or too scared to do her job properly. As her manager, Shoesmith should have been aware of that. Can't find anything out about your staff or the problems they may be having when you are on corporate freebies. A half decent manager should get out of thier chair as often as possible and talk to the people at the coal face.
