It was all core sciences (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Environmental etc.) but a double awarded subject (two GCSE's).I did double science but fairly sure chemical reactions were covered in both
But yes you did do basic chemistry (surly the first chemical reaction all kids are made to study is burning sulphur) but not as in depth as the full subject.0 -
It comes down to this, people are afraid to correct children form an early age due to this "you might make them feel demeaned crap" so you get these situations where teachers see children speaking ungrammatically and behaving badly and dare not do anything about it.
Many people with so called degrees can't spell or speak properly, you see the tutors wince but they cannot correct them either.
We are producing a nation of illiterate unemployable half wits, it's very sad.Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0 -
There is no shortage of people who want jobs, so why is he bemoaning the fact that the ones he employs are rubbish.
That's down to his recruitment methods surely - a simple entrance exam would sort that out. Sit down tests in numeracy, literacy, whatever before they get an interview maybe.
I'd suggest an "Entering Retail" exam to be passed, but that'd only end up a shambles, costing far too much as it got bogged down in red tape and over-paid people far from the coalface running it.
A simple 50 questions on basic maths, 50 questions on basic English and 25 scenario questions should sort it out. And the ability to enunciate ....0 -

Years ago I have to do an 'exam' for a part time job at asda. I was doing my A levels at the time I thought it would be easy.
How wrong I was, 100 simple maths questions in 5 minutes. Hardest test I've even done.0 -
Actually, anyone who has shopped in an Aldi will note the productivity of staff there. The checkout operators are unbelievably quick. They actually make you feel guilty for not emptying your trolley quicker.
The other salient fact: they pay their staff much more than do Tesco.0 -
That's as maybe but there are a lot of thick people about who have left school in the last 20 years, I mean real half witsBACKFRMTHEEDGE wrote: »As a teacher I get fed up of listening to this sort of rubbish. I won't be shopping in Tesco again (it's an awful store anyway) and I'll be suggesting to my colleagues they do the same....
And some spelling on here is awful, we all make the odd typo but !!!!!!. I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left. :rolleyes:0 -

Perhaps Terry Leahy would like school children to learn more about a healthy diet?0

I worked in a department store years ago and before anyone was taken on we had to complete a simple test where you wrote something, followed by an induction and a test on customer service.PasturesNew wrote: »There is no shortage of people who want jobs, so why is he bemoaning the fact that the ones he employs are rubbish.

If you failed either you didn't get the job. And the tests were damn easy and yes people did fail them.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
