Standards in many state schools are "woefully low" and employers must "pick up the pieces", the boss of the UK's biggest supermarket chain has said.

It was ever thus. He could have said that in any decade in any era.
Intellectual elites do not realise the depths of stupidity that exist in many people. This is only tangentially to do with education, and is more to do with native ability.0 -
Well he would say that
I believe he pays just above the minimum wage .... but presumably wants graduate level shelve stackers0 -

that used to be the way before 24hr supermarkets , shelf stackers were students.
gotta admit though you pay peanuts...well you know the rest.Have you tried turning it off and on again?0 -
He's only saying what anybody who deals with lots of school leavers knows to be the truth.0

As more people who leave school go into university compared with days gone by, the people who leave school to go straight into work are on average much less intelligent.0

its ok, labour are currently arranging for every school leaver to have 10 A******* GCSE's and 3 A Level A*******. Then every solitary school child will go to Oxford or Cambridge and they will all get a 1st Class degree.
This will not devalue their status at all. Remember, if Tarquin can go there, it is not fair that Dazza can't go there either.
And I, being overweight, a smoker, completely unfit and no good at football should, by right, be given a 50k a week deal at Man Utd and get picked to play for England. It is my right. We are all the same*
*although clearly we are not.
why can't the lefty just realise some people are stupid and some people are bad. Once they accept that simple fact, then think of the money that could be saved.0 -
What does he want, GCSEs in checkout operation?Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Galbraith0

As an infrequent customer of Tesco, I'd like to point out that standards in many Tesco stores are "woefully low" and customers often have to "pick up the pieces".
I'm not sure why the Tesco boss cares if staff can calculate the area of a trapezium, analyse a Shakespearean play or determine the results of a chemical reaction. Just put the products on the shelf in the right place and swipe 'em across the scanner. Simplez.0 -
the problem is the state schools churn out people with low standards. tesco then end up with these people as their staff.
some of their managers are not really fit to wipe the floors.
once they had a deal on where a simpson film cost 6.99 and outside the door, was a large cut out homer giving the details of the deal. I then went in and took a dvd from a similar looking stand. When I went to pay, they charged me 14.99 so I took it back and tried to get my "double the difference" refund. They told me there was no 6.99 deal. I went to the stand and it had magically disappeard - i then went to the entrance and the homer had gone as well. they had packed it all away during the hour i was shopping.
the "manager", instead of giving me my refund, made a whole song and dance routine about it, until we had a shouting match in the store. eventually the real manager appeared, said sorry and instantly gave me the refund.
young people (and I am relatively young) are by and large useless. you need someone special to be good at their job whilst being young.0 -
I'm sorry, but he no right to say this.
Tescos are a bunch of sly !!!!ers, deliberatly marketing and displaying goods in a manner to attempt to con people.
If you check their offers you'll often find overpriced items (not on offer) in the same display. Eg 3 packs of sausages for £6, but magically a few of the packs will not be on offer but in the same display. Hence if you acciently buy a non offer item, all items revert back to single price.
If he is to complain about schools, maybe he should have stores that are not deliberably designed to con people. Or maybe he is saying the schools have failed as people cant work out what things cost in his stores.0
