Regarding the dampness issue, cavity wall insulation would go someway towards helping with dampness in general around your home and is definitely worth looking into.

I don’t really know much about dampness and the causes but if this is only one area it maybe the result of something else. It might be worth popping over to the ‘In my home (includes DIY) Moneysaving’ board or the House Buying, Renting & Selling’ board for some maybe more expert advice.
