Off Peak Tariffs Postcode Lottery!

Options
Hi Folks,

I've been reading the boards and browsing on this fab site for years and have finally come across an issue which I can't find posted anywhere - yippee :T

Mains gas is not available at my postcode and I'm looking to replace an old anthracite boiler which has serviced the hot water and wet central heating.

I've been a hostage to oil and LPG prices before and am keen to install an electric combi system to avoid these fuels.

The system I'm looking at is Thermaflow which I've seen discussed elsewhere on the forum (it looks an excellent system which will also link into our Clearview stove and eventually solar panels) but my problem has been trying to find out information on the Off Peak tariffs available to me.

Because we don't live in Scotland I believe Scottish Power's 18 hour off peak isn't available. I am currently with EDF on a standard tariff but the best they can offer is 20:20 (7 hours during the week and weekends at 20% off standard rates). I cannot find anywhere on the internet to compare or even find out about different off peak tariffs.

Does anyone have any ideas or know where I can get this information. I am also looking for an installer who might cover Northumberland. Postcode is NE65 9JD, if that helps.

Many thanks,
Nicky

Outside of Scotland you are unlikely to get an off peak tariff that offers more than 7 hours at the cheap rate. Given that the rules have now (April this year) changed on LPG which allows you to change supplier every (year?) without changing your tank is this now a better option?

I'd check with you're local REC (npower), I think true residential off peaks are only supplied by host suppliers.

Have you not thought about E7 or E10? you should be able to find comparison sites that that do e7 but maybe not e10.
  • Many thanks I'll give npower a ring and see what they can come up with.

I am reluctant to go down the lpg route, although that has got to be good news about the law changing on suppliers.

I think you are a little confused here.

If you mean your "host Supplier" as your distribution company then they responsible for approving and controlling the off peak metering equipment at the moment.

Most suppliers offer and can charge you off peak tariffs.
