Lost card & account raided

Hi there!

Would greatly appreciate your enwisened advice for my flatmate, please?

During a night out, her purse was taken and almost immediately the maximum daily withdrawal made from a local cash point. I presume therefore that someone will have overseen her entering her PIN. At just after midnight a second max withdrawal was made and later a purchase made before she reported the card gone.

Is there any way that she can argue this sum back from the bank? They so far have been less than proactively helpful!

Thanks!

  • Did she take money out of an ATM whilst out or pay a bar bill with the card?
If not one has to ask how the fraudster got hold of the Pin.

Was it written down anywhere, or perhaps in her mobile phone?

Most ATM's these days will have some sort of CCTV so if bank wont cooperate go to police and get a crime reference number then go back to bank and make a complaint.

However if the bank find that the Pin was compromised then she will not be refunded.
  • Thanks for the reply, even if it seems pretty hopeless now...

Yep, paid a bar bill by Chip & PIN, so the only obvious solution is that somebody was taking a bit too much interest in whatever she was typing in. I imagine that is sufficient to represent the compromising of the PIN code?

This is your get out of jail card!
The pub/club should have CCTV if the police want to see it.
