  • To be honest with you looking at some of them prices on the oxfam site, I'd say they are making a pretty penny on them.

a11waysindebt there is a difference between Oxfam making a good profit on their cards, etc, where all the profits go to Oxfam, and the high street shops where most of the profit goes to the shop, with only a token amount going to the charity.

The postal strike(s) are a good reason to not buy or send any cards this year.

Maybe make a charity donation equal to the postage and cost of the cards you won't be buying?

I'm all for giving to my local charity shops, even offered to help out sometimes.

But once you start with websites, advertising on the tv etc to me it starts to be a small business.

Most charity shops are businesses as charities are limited in the amount of trading they can carry out. However, the business would not be able to distribute its profits to individuals, but be required to give them all to the charity which they were set up to benefit.

The point of the post was exactly the point that you (presumably) want ALL the profit to got the charity rather than to WH Smiths, Brirthdays, etc and then they give 2% or something.

Anyone got any more online Xmas cards direct from charity stores?

The charities I am involved with both have christmas cards for sale on their websites. For one charity you can also buy them online. The second one doesn't have a buy online option although you could send a manual payment by Paypal.

    They don't have stores though.
  • My 2p worth on this one is that even if you buy direct from the charity less than half of the purchase price goes to them and the cards cost a fortune!

Last year instead of buying 2 packs of 20 cards at £4 a pack with a maximum of £4 going to the charity I bought a box of 50 Woolworths value cards for £1 and gave a fiver to cancer research through their just giving page online.

This year since the demis of woolies I'm going to re-use the cards I was given last year and give the cash I would have spent to charity again.

Did you ask for them all to be returned to you then? :rotfl:

  • No, but that's a really good idea! Nice one.
