Car Licence Query

Options
Hi

I put my learner driver wife on my car insurance a couple of years back, and we were told by our insurer at the time (Norwich Union) to put down the date she got her provisional licence for how long she has held a licence, which was in 2000!

Since then she has passed, and our insurance is up for renewal, and we are looking to change due to the price NU are quoting.

Do I still put 2000 as the date the wife got a licence, or do I put when she passed?

It makes quite a difference in the quotes!

Thanks

Id put the date she passed eg the date she got her full licence
  • You need to put the date she passed her test I think......!!

Further to suggested the answers you have been given, (the date you passed your test is irrelevant!), you really need to answer the question as it's asked by each insurer you get quotes from.

eg.With Aviva (formerly NU) you first tell them you have a full licence, and in answer to "how long licence held?" tell them the length of time since you first held a provisional licence.

You can play with the wording all you want. When you pass your test, you send off for a new licence - and send back the other. You no longer own that licence.

Car insurance isn't worth fiddling in my opinion. If you crash into someone/something the first thing the insurance company is going to do is investigate ways not to cover you.... by playing with words you're putting it on a plate for them.

How is answering the questions correctly an attempt at "fiddling?"

Giving false answers to questions is fraudulent - and the question asked rarely refers to your "ownership" of a licence!

They are asking exactly the same question as the ones that state "Full UK Licence since:" - it is just phrased incorrectly. We all know what the question is asking, some may chose to interpret it differently.
I'm all for beating the system but not by being a chancer.

No. Each insurer sets its own questions.

In the one being discussed here (Aviva, formerly Norwich Union), they want to know what type of licence you currently hold AND how long (in years) since you took out a provisional licence.

Nothing to do with being "phrased incorrectly" at all!

Maybe the OP could tell us the exact wording of the question!

Here you go. (From Aviva's quote form):

How long have you held a licence?

Please indicate how long you have held a valid UK or European Union driving licence (starting from when you were issued with a provisional licence).

I can't get on the website to have look, but would be interested in finding out. If thats the case then the few people who have held a provisional licence for a while could make a great saving here.
I still don't understand why the premium would be lower in cost if someone has held a provisional licence for longer, as carrying that card around in their wallet doesn't make them less of risk on the roads?

EDIT: Ignore part of that, hadn't seen Quentin's post before typing.
