if its a debit card you should get a cheque book .
Is it a debit card or a cash card ?
Best option is to phone nationwide branch direct and ask .

I specifically asked for a cheque book when I opened my account as I wasn't sure if they issued them as standard. It took a couple of weeks to come through.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

When you say cash card. Does it say Flexaccount or the words debit card ? My debit card has the VISA symbol on it. It looks like the OP has a Basic bank account (See bottom of page). This does not normally come with a cheque book. It has internet access to pay bills via standing orders. It may be worthwhile phoning up the Nationwide to request a Flexaccount upgrade.

The Nationwide have messed the OP around. It is still probably best not to vent your spleen at them until you get what you want.

I write 2 cheques a year. Everything else is done online. Sort code, Account number and your reference are all that is required to pay a bill. The sort code and account can be found on the bottom of the payee's cheque book, for instance, if they are a person. You can often find these details by asking the payee if they are a company. Also check the back of their bills. Use your name as a reference if it makes sense to the recipient of the funds. For credit cards you often use your credit card number as a reference. For utilities then you often use the account number they gave you.

How can a cash card have words 'debit card'? Nationwide do offer different types of account:
    • basic account with a cash card (Cirrus) and no chequebook
    • flexaccount with a cash card (Cirrus) and a chequebook
    • flexaccount with a debit card (Visa) and a chequebook
It has internet access to pay bills via standing orders.
Normally standing orders are used for regular payments of the same amount. For variable amounts it is better to use single payments.

There is reference by Martin to nationwide debit card being the best way to draw money abroad; has anyone done this using nationwide as a secondary account as I do not want to switch away from Smile

    Thanks

I have, you don`t have to, you just ignore the paperwork for the transfer. They do like you to but it isn`t part of the clause for opening an account. HTH
