  • Good luck with the changeover! Crumb is fairly similar to what you're using now (Oko) in texture/appearance but best to mix some in gradually so they don't get upset and decide to go elsewhere!

Before this thread turns into a spitting and hissing match and gets locked I just want to mention about the perils of normal clay based clumping cat litter. Basically it contains an ingredient called bentonite which is a naturally occurring mineral in some clay - but that does not make it safe! It's what makes the clay bind when it becomes wet. When ingested by your cat after licking its paws it can cause chronic constipation and aggravate renal failure. Please see these links I copied from another forum:

Detailed information on bentonite and other clay litters is available on

If you chucked some clumping clay cat litter down the drains it would cause a blockage. Imagine it inside your cat's intestine.

One of my cats nearly died from chronic constipation - never again will clumping clay litter cross my doorstep!!!

I tried "World's Best" but I found it rather smelly. I was brought up on a farm and unsurprisingly it reminds me of animal feed.

interesting - my two have been using clumping cat litter for years. Maybe because I am a skinflint/pauper their intestines are likely not at risk of the damage you write of as I often mixed talc scented with wood chip or recycled paperbased stuff. I have stopped using talc scented due to concerns about the chemicals. One thing that is deffo good about Oko plus is that it's wood other that watching pennies does mean I often mix with large granuled clumping mineral for Lidles or Aldies which both cats kick off their paws. However for those with minimal storage/patience/time that's not an option for everyone!
  • Hi everyone. I've just started using chick crumb as an alternative cat litter, as it's so cheap. I'm slightly worried about mites - I've come across some forum posts about this. Has anyone experienced mites in their chick crumbs? I'd rather not have to fumigate my flat.
Wins: Stairgate worth £27.99 and ViewSonic Monitor worth £129 = £156.99/2015, hoping to win a car! ;)
