scenic misbehaving

Last few weeks I have been having intermittent starting problems with my scenic. Some mornings she starts first thing, other times I have to turn her over loads of times any can hear her trying to start and eventually she makes it. She has never failed to start but sometimes after these difficult to start episodes she will "bunny hop" a little. I took her to the garage and he tightened my fanbelt cos it was making a screeching noise on start up but the noise is still there albeit not as bad. Could this be related to the starting problem?
Anyone any other sugestions on what to rule out at home before going back to the garage, due to have a baby in a few weeks and need the car to start when I am in labour lol!!
Coming soon............
Brand new baby first showing in November!
Brand new baby boy (Matthew) born 3 weeks early weighing a diddly 5lb 4 oz!!

  • The fanbelt is nothing to do with your starting problem.

Check for excess moisture in and around the engine bay, its almost certainly ignition-related so look at coils, plugs, etc.

Something similar happened on my parents scenic. When was the last time your cambelt was changed?
  • when was it last serviced, sounds like a basic fault to me
  • Is it a 2003 onwards diesel model?
  • If its diesel could it be glow plugs?

I'd guess at the individual coils too if it's a petrol model, notorious on all renault petrol engines:rolleyes:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • I've had this problem on & off for over a year & 2 different mechanics (Renault & my independent) can't find the actual problem!

My petrol Scenic is an 02 plate. I've had the coils replaced twice since I've owned it (5 years now) & it has has all its regular services. It does have a bad problem with condensation - I have to either have the windows open or the air-con on even for short journeys & in the cold weather it can take a good 5 minutes to clear the inside windscreen of excess water. I have 1 of those "moisture trap" things which I empty out most weeks.

My mechanic doesn't think the excess water is causing the problem though (its just really annoying ). I never know when it isn't going to start - no pattern with excess water/weather so I'm still baffled.

I love driving my car, & I can fit loads in for holidays, but I'm losing faith in it as I never know if it will start.

Seems to be a common problem - I meet lots of Scenic drivers who say the same thing!
& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D
