very easy actually, just use microsoft paint and add text to your picture. Simple and free.

For more advanced features you can try Picasa, free from google though I'm not 100% sure it can do watermarks.

I use Picture-Shark to watermark my photos, this is a free program and can watermark photographs in batches. It can be downloaded from http://www.picture-shark.com

If you have Microsoft Word there is a watermark option included, just search 'watermark' in the help or search box.
