They wont even give me my balance on the phone. just looked at my co op card. Its a visa debit like my barclays one. Does that mean I wont be able to use it at pay at pump?

If it begins 4508, then you probably won't be able to as that's essentially an electron card (even though the numbers are embossed).

My Barclays debit card starts 4658 which seems to be in the same family as normal visa debits (albeit with no cheque guarantee, but who needs that these days).

Ahh yes, I got caught out with that one! Not so funny story really, Had nothing but fresh air in fuel ank, went to Asda to get fuel, big queue, waited anxiously for my turn, got to pump (big queue behind now) and card refused. I didn't know you couldnt use it there. There are no cashier pumps at that particular Asda, so had to limp, even more anxiously to the next station and just made it. I was so scared of card not working again, that I just bought £4 of fuel with change in my purse in case I had made a banking error. Horrible, but now I know!

By the way, you can just ask for a private room, we did it on Friday at Co-op, they did try to fob us off with the comfy chairs at the front but we just said "no", and voila! they found a room!

wonder if it will be a problem as they were a creditor when i went BR[/QUOTE]

Shouldn't be a problem. Barclays are one of two (Co-op t'other) BR friendly banks. My ex OH opened an account with Barclays with no problems and Barclays were one of his biggest creditors in BR and he told them too and still opened an account for him.

thats weird. I have been extremely impressed with them. Telephone banking is excellent. Care to share what happened?

I am thinking about getting a barclays account as well, just so i can have a full debit card (not coops visa debit electron card)

According to this thread, the Co-op Cashminder debit card now works as a VISA debit now: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2006303
