Scrappage Extension

As soon as the government announced the scrappage sheme we were keen to take part but upon reading the terms and conditions our V reg car missed out by one day having been registered on 1st September 1999. However, now with the extension being announced we are still very keen to scrap our car and have a brand new one. I've seen on the Directgov website that the extension has been agreed and that it's a case of waiting for the relevant agreements to be reached but does anyone know how long this takes?

I've found a dealer that has one in stock and although it's not close to home I'd be willing to travel to ensure I get one as our local dealer is quoting January for the next delivery and there is the danger it might be delayed and then falling outside of the 16 week time frame. If I drove to the dealers and the car broke down, does anyone know if I can get it towed by a breakdown truck to the dealers and them still accept the vehicle? Also are you tied to the dealer you bought the car from for any warranty related issues?

As long as you offer up the used car for scrappage, it doesn't matter if its a runner (just needs to comply with the usual terms)

The new car will be covered by any UK dealer of that make - it doesn't need to be the original selling dealer. (In fact you'd probably be covered by any approved dealer in Europe!)

  • Thanks Premier.

That's good to know. Just need to find out when the extension becomes official. I've been looking online every day hoping that something will be announced and it's annoying not knowing how long it will take.

Does anyone know if the eastimates for how much cash there is left are accurate? I heard that when the scheme is extended it is expected to last until January but I've also seen news articles saying that the claims that the money is running out are very innacurate.

Does anyone also know what happens if your car isn't delivered in time? I heard you could reapply but if the money has run out does that mean you can't reapply or does it mean that you can reapply for your initial allocation of money?

I thought they were just extending the amount of cash available for the present scheme, I didn't know they were altering the qualifying criteria of the scrap vehicle.

    Oops pressed thanks.

But yes, I thought the same as that, meaning the car wouldn't qualify (unless you wanted a nissan ;) )
  • They are extending it to include cars registered before 28th February 2000 and vans registered before 28th February 2002.
