Hi all, need to get cover on my boiler and CH. Is there any companies to avoid or a comparison chart somewhere?

Thanks for any help

  • Is it better to just do this locally do you think? I had mine serviced a few months ago and it was only 50 quid.

Not sure, i know the best thing to do is to not have cover but, put money away each month as an emergency fund, but as i have young children, i need an emergency service at hand.

Since posting this i have seen the thread from the money mail, so maybe have a look at that!

    Good luck
  • You could always make enquiries in your local area to find out response times of the various locals if you need them in an emergency. They might even give you a special card to contact them if needed.

Nah. Young kids? Up until about 1970, the majority survived in houses no better heated than an iron age round house. You only need worry if they turn blue and even then you have time to get them sorted. I suppose you realise that boiler insurance is sold through fear.

Having just had my two and a half year old boiler break down and cost me £440, I would rather have the insurance and not live in fear in the future!

How much does insurance cost? I think i would be more in fear of paying £240 every year for certain than paying £440 perhaps once in 5 years. But each to his own style of economics.

  • One particular clause which caught me out several years ago was that my boiler was 8 years old and when the man came to fix it under my insurance boiler contract, he stated the parts were about £75 but it would take 2 and a half hours to sort as it was losing pressure. He ordered the parts via my boiler book and several days later the company Homeserve informed me by a telephone call that my boiler was uneconomical to fix and sent me £200 and cancelled my policy. My brother increased the falling water presssure with a £1 bike pump and it has worked since.

My point is... check the clause if the boiler is too old, i.e. uneconomic to fix due to its age... check this clause first in all contracts of this nature as it caught me out!!!

Maybe years ago boilers were simple, but now in modern times you'll learn that they are far more complicated and a lot more things to go wrong! I am sure your cupboards are filled with powder egg and condensed milk for your cold emergency's so you'll be fine LoL.

For example each of my 18 rads are independently wirelessly controlled.
