ABC for a first time driver

Hiya,

my friend may be getting a second hand car for free, given to her since its so old and not worth much anyway.

So i just wondered, what does she need to do to drive it legally?

Insurance?
Registration with the DVLA or something about change of ownership?

Also, she is thinking about leaving it parked at her home until she has time to learn to drive in the uni holidays, so will she need to pay tax, make sure it has MOT while it is parked there with no-one using it, get insurance for it etc etc (ie leave it lying there for free until she starts learning?)

thanks-this is kind of money saving :o

First the car has to be registered to the new owner.

And the DVLA imformed that it is not being used on the road and is stored on private land, this is called a "SORN" statement "Standard Off Road Notification"

When they intend to use it.
You MUST get insurance before driving it on the road.
It must have a M.O.T. test certificate, if this has run out, you MUST book it in for a test, before driving it on the road, when it has a pass cerificate, you can then go to the post office and get the Road Tax.

The it can be driven legally on the road, assuming they have passed the driving tests, or has a qualified driver sitting by them, (This person must have held a full license for at least 1 full year)

I did read a small column in the sunday times months ago that there were plans that you were even going to have insurance if it was on the road and not used.

i noticed it as the nephew wanted to get himself a car before passing his test. I tried to put him off, but oh-no he knew best! then as it was so old the insurance was too expensive and he had to sell it on again.

yeah pretty sure its 3 years

mmmm...so when you drive it to the MOT centre, it won't have MOT yet...how does that work. Or do you have to have it towed to the MOT centre?

As I said in my post it MUST be booked in for an MOT
I am sorry if I was wrong about the time period, but I thought it was 1yr for private tution and 3yrs if you want to become a qualified driving instructor.
Either way a quick call to Mr Plod should sort it if not sure.
