The gap between JSA Allowance and First Wage

Hi,

Just wonderinf if there is any support when you start a new job when you have been claiming JSA?.I have already taken my years 'JOB GRANT' so that is not available.I have an interview tomorrow but the first pay day will not be until the end of November? and once you start work you have to sign off? so what do I do for money from the last day of signing until my first wage?

many thanks

    Hi there,

You should get paid right up to the day that you start work inclusive so that may help when you sign off but otherwise i know some employers have a wage advance system to help new employee's..

Also if health and safety is at risk then Crisis loans can still be taken even if you are working

    Cheers
  • I've asked a similar question. I started work a week ago and have another two weeks to wait for pay day. I thought the Jobcentre tried to help people get back to work!

The only way I managed this transition was the bank of mum and dad otherwise I don't know how I would have afforded the bus fares never mind eating.

my boyfriend signed on today, 26 weeks +, and told them about his new jop with a posible start date of 1st November. They have told him they will pay for his new work clothes and travel to work.
  • You get your job seeker's up until the day before you finish work and you can roll housing benefit on for 4 weeks after you start work. If you've been out of work for over 6 months, you get a grant.
  • Ah yes, the old "6 month clause". Guess that's me screwed. Doh.

Yes I'm screwed too. Not quite at 6 months yet, starting work but varying hours, no clue if LHA will continue & rent privately - great!!!

I thought everyone on jobseekers got the £100 grant for finding a job 16+ hrs that's going to last at least 5 weeks?

I work for the Job centre, anyone signing on who has done a new claim within a few months they can get work clothes Day 1 eligibility and also ask about a bus/train pass for the first month of employment (we do in Leeds)
