What a morning!

I was taking the chain off my motorcycle so I can go out and get some jobs done for today. As I turned the key, it snapped and got stuck deep inside the lock!

Bas*ard I thought. I'm going to have to fork out hundreds for a lock smith to come out asap.

I called my local motorcycle shop for advice and they kindly gave me a mobile number of a man who could cut the chain for me, but it isn't his profession. I called the man who said he was on his way to another town, so I timed it perfectly. He was able to come to me (within 5 minutes) and took 10 or so minutes cutting the chain off.

I asked him how much I owe him. I thought it would have been pricey considering how quick he came out, and that I disrupted his plans for going to the other town. £10 he said. I replied "£10!?!!? Christ almighty. You've gone out of your way to help me and quite quickly infact."

So I handed him £40 and told him to take it.

Quite chuffed actually because if he had said no to cutting my chain, I'd have to fork out hundreds for a bloody lock smith.

It's good to see there are still hard working, generous people around, who aren't charging rediculous prices for their services. :j

It's great when one person's simple action can make your day that much better. I think you were a little over-generous though - £40?! :p

Maybe :D but he did take just 5 minutes from calling him to get here and I sort of disrupted his plans. I believe he had a job of some sort 20 miles away, which he delayed so he could come to my aid. And the fact that he said he'd only charge me a tenner. I could think of a few people/companies that would have taken advantage of the situation to fill their pockets.

If he asked for a call out fee of £100 and labour at £50, he'd have got the chewing gum stuck to the bottom of my boots as a tip.

I'm usually a tight bas*ard so me being over-generous is very rare but I felt he deserved it. :rotfl:

It's nice when people do stuff like that.

A couple of weeks ago my phone fell out of my pocket when in a taxi and i didnt realise until I got home. I called the taxi firm who said the only way they could get it to me would be for the driver to drive over, but I'd have to pay the taxi fair. The driver was right at the other end of town, a journey that costs at least £10 at that time of day, usually £15 with the traffic.

When he turned up, and I asked how much I owed him, he said £5.

Some guys would really up the price just because they're in a situation where they could, while others are generous.

I lost my mobile phone in a taxi. The taxi driver phoned my house number and asked for my address so he could bring it back. He brought it back personally (ie. not in work time) and wouldn't accept any money for doing it!

My OH found that his brakes on his car had jammed on overnight, and dreaded having to call out a mobile mechanic (he wasn't covered for breakdowns at home).

He phoned the mechanic who spent 20 mins on the phone explaining it was related to a car wash the previous day, and to just keep trying to move the car back and forwards, which did the trick.

My OH truly believed he needed new brakes and was preparing to pay £300+ but the mechanic gave the advice for free. He could easily have earnt himself a shedload if he'd been dishonest.

Again nice to see people doing the right thing rather than taking people for a ride at every available opportunity.
