  • VAT is also charged on the P&P price so if it cost $20 to send the parcel then vat would be charged on that also

Are you sure? The P&P would have been paid in the U.S. I wouldn't have thought that that would attract UK tax. I could be wrong.

The value of the item is the cost of the item PLUS the cost to get it to the UK.

I agree that this is very high. As an indicator I had a parcel imported from the US last month with a declaration of a value of $100 plus $30 postage. I was charged £17.50 including £8 of Parcel Forces charges.

So based on very rough calculations the package must be described as being around the $300 mark including postage which must have been sent "express delivery" hence the £13.50 charge from Parcel Force - (http://www.parcelforce.com/portal/pw/content1?catId=2500042&mediaId=load105044)

Also for info gifts that are imported are only waived if the value is less than £36. £18 if it's not a gift. However I have regularly been sent gifts from the US that have a stated value of over £36 but don't always get charged customs on it. I collect Disney figures that are only available in the parks so get sent lots of fairly high value items.

Certainly all of the items I have been charged customs on have never been opened and only charged based on the declared value but then it's not really a common product so they wouldn't be on any lists.
  • Practically-speaking, would the godfather be willing to reimburse you the cost of collection of the parcel?
