Abbey - OTP - One Time Password

Just logged on to my Abbey account to see a message saying they are soon introducing this OTP feature - password to your mobile phone.

You will need this to alter certain details online - eg personal details and payment details. If you don't have a phone you will still be able to make changes via branch or telephone.

I'm fed up of being forced down routes of technology that I don't necessarily want to embrace.

I have a mobile phone but rarely use it and it is often not charged up, and why should I have to give them my mobile number( although they do say won't be used for marketing purposes).
I already have a userid and 2 part password - it is up to me to keep them secure.

  • You know what to do then!
I left Shabby because of their useless information systems, processes and call centres.

Intelligent Finance operate a similar system. It's pretty straightforward, I don't have any problem with it.

Yes, I've considered it but I suppose most banks will go along similar routes in the future. Customer service has certainly taken a nosedive in the last few years.

I'll see how I get on with it, it is not as though I make payment changes frequently.
  • PayPal has been doing this for a while but it's opt-in. I hope Abbey gives users the option as I am happy with their entry system already. I don't want to have to get my mobile phone and then wait for a text and then enter a code...

pretty sure it was not an opt-in

HSBC do the same thing now.

Other banks make you have a card reader and generate a transaction specific-code from an online code, and another code created by your card and cardreader.

It's a bit of a pain, but is likely to spread and spread. So you might as well get used to it :(

You could move to First Direct....they don't do it, and they'll even give you £100 for moving. :D

You are missing the point: the OP does not use mobiles.

And he is not the only one.

Beware, Abbey asks people who do not / cannot use OPT to sign a disclaimer that Abbey will not be held responsible for fraudulent activities on your account.

They said they had one but use it rarely, which is much the same as me.
And Abbey will permit you to use branch or phone as an alternative, which is not unlike some other banks which don't have the text option and require you to phone them.

I do not possess a mobile phone and don't intend getting one.
I have had 3 phone calls from Shabby asking me why I haven't taken advantage of the OTP system. I have already sent a letter of complaint to them, as I went through the same set of questions each time and wonder what they did with the first two I did.

However you can still see your online transactions.
    Log on as normal.
Next page at the bottom when it says in a red box Register Now, underneath in grey and some days it is white there is another box which says Register Later. Click on that
At the bottom of the next page above the red box which says Register Later, there is in small blue print Prefer to Register Later. If you click on that it will take you to your online transactions.

Then at least you can see your own account, which I had difficulty in
working out a few weeks ago. However, if you do want to set up a payment to a new payee, the only alternative at the moment is to do it over the phone. More of a pain, but cheaper than buying a mobile phone!

I like the way Lloyds do it. With them you can give your landline number and within 10 seconds of trying to set up a payment you get a callback from them veryifying it's you doing it. I did point out to Shabbey that Lloyds can incorporate landline numbers, so why can't they!

So I am now waiting to see what their response is! I won't get too excited.
