I don't really like these but would they be warm??

what about velvet or buying cheap curtains and lining the with fleeces(AmesxxxX)

I would say you need a heavy velvet type curtain to really shut out the cold. Have a look in your local charity shops

Z, not that easy when it looks like she's about to lose her job.

The last excuse was "you were being to controlling" - this excuse "it looks like she's about to lose her job". Has she lost it?

What's the next excuse? She's got a bone in her leg?

The simple fact is she can't be bothered to repay you and just expects you to lap up the loss.

So long as they're heavy enough not to flap in the draught - any set of curtains will be fine.

Gordon Brown does this thing with his mouth when he talks that makes me gag.

    Do I dare ask?

Buffy, it wasn't my idea, I got it from BB who got it from somewhere on OS!

Z, I know, but she seemed really panicky and upset when she phoned. I don't know how to tactfully say that I'm really sorry about the problem with her job, and I can wait for the money I've lent her, but that this needs sorting soon and all it is is one form that she can do herself without it costing her anything.

With staircases going up to the upper floor, they set up a giant convection current which has cold air trickling down the stairs and hot air floating on the ceiling, then up the hole the stairs come from.

The upshot is that your upstairs is toasty and warm and your downstairs is cold.

The best way is keep the hot air trapped where you are, and the cold air trapped where you're not. Many people box off their stairs if they come directly into the living room. You might be able to do that with a curtain. If you can't, then you'll just have to live with it.

It is getting colder - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8299079.stm

It's an interesting article, but surely a study of 10 years is far too short to be able to base predictions on? Global average temperature changes (ice ages etc) last so long that 10 years is nothing in comparison, even a few decades wouldn't really be enough to build a model on? But I'm not a scientist so what do I know.

Also interesting for the dumbing down at the BBC, misspelling skeptic.

Of course she will be - it's going to affect *her*. And unlike in past situations, no amount of sob-storying/threatening/demeaning or lying to you will get you to bail her out of that particular situation.

You can tell her it is an opportunity to get her life in order. She's had a warning - she's got time. Unlike many people during this recession who just turned up one morning to a padlocked factory.

She was on a month's probation when she started her new job, today she's been told that it's been extended by two weeks because she's not fitting in. There's been one or two other minor problems that she could have handled better - she was supposed to be taught one aspect of her work, the guy wouldn't show her it, and so when she had to do it on her own she made a mistake. They're also unsure that she can manage the heavy lifting, although she says she's getting used to it now and managing fine.
