Do you have double glazing Buffy? draught excluders might make a difference. Do you have carpet or floorboards downstairs?

yeah... well its an open hallway?

Get a nice heavy curtain to go across the front door for starters. If its open hallway/staircase then all the hot air is going to go straight upstairs unfortunately

Don't know about keeping the house warm Buffy, although I've found halogen heaters help keep me warm - the heat doesn't travel though, it only warms what it's aimed at.

Cartman on South Park calls them Cheesy Poofs too, I think it must be an American thing.

With staircases going up to the upper floor, they set up a giant convection current which has cold air trickling down the stairs and hot air floating on the ceiling, then up the hole the stairs come from.

The upshot is that your upstairs is toasty and warm and your downstairs is cold.

The best way is keep the hot air trapped where you are, and the cold air trapped where you're not. Many people box off their stairs if they come directly into the living room. You might be able to do that with a curtain. If you can't, then you'll just have to live with it.
