Cahoot Webcard no more! Any alternatives please?

Hello

After recently re-installing Windows, I've just tried to download Cahoot Webcard again but its completely disappeared from Cahoot website.

I received no warning what so ever from Cahoot that they would be closing this service and only found out via Wiki.

When online fraud is increasing, why on earth would they close this valuable option?

This feature was very useful for me so can't really see any reason to stay with Cahoot now. Are there any Webcard alternatives please?

Thanks

  • To my surprise, I found the same this evening. I tried using my cahoot webcard to make a payment and it is no longer working. How can they discontinue the product without prior intimation? I guess, I should get my money out of there before they go bankrupt  .

Reply I got from Cahoot regarding this....

" Thank you for contacting cahoot in Coventry.

As of 09-10-09 the cahoot webcard facility was removed, a global secure message was sent to all customers at the start of September to inform them that the webcard was being removed.

We have made the decision to remove the cahoot Webcard facility for a number or reasons.

We have found that this facility is only regularly used by a small percentage of our customer base and as such believe that the resources currently dedicated to running it could be better utilised elsewhere.

In addition to this there are several commonly-used retailers with whom it is not compatible, which can often mean that customers have to process these transactions using their original card number.

Please note that we are looking to provide a more efficient alternative for this facility in the future. Although we do not have a set date for this as yet, we would notify you before its launch.

If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us again."

    I replied....

" That seems a crazy decision to me. When online fraud is getting worst, you pull the plug on a very good app to protect your customers?!

I used Webcard frequently and was a strong reason why I continued to bank with Cahoot. Now that's gone, I am looking for a Webcard alternative and as soon as I find one I will have to consider switching banks."

Thank you for contacting cahoot in Coventry.

I am sorry that a facility you have been using quite a lot has been removed. This is a decision we strongly considered and the final decision was to remove it.

However I am sure we will introduce an alterative in the future and you will be notified.

Once again please accept my apologies for any inconvenience.

If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

I too have found out that Webcards are no more. What a disapointment. No reason now to stay with Cahoot. I would love to find a similar replacement but expect that there is none. I note that Cahoot states they are working on a replacement. Not much customer relations sence in removing your unique product and upsetting a loyal customer base before being it a position to offer an alternative. I think we will be waiting ages before we benefit from any good alternative.

I did - there was a message on my Homepage. I shan't miss it as I think I only ever used it twice.

I almost invariably use cashback Credit Cards which are being improved with features like 'Mastercard Secure' and 'Verified by Visa'.

Not anymore they don't. Neteller ceased doing Virtual Net+ cards, or webcards as Cahoot called them, at the end of February 2012.

I had a Cahoot, then a Neteller, now I am looking for my next virtual pre paid debit card. Suggestions?

Can't you just use a real pre-paid card - and only top it up as and when you need it. Can't be much more hassle than a virtual one?

Or just use a credit card - fraud is rare and on the odd occasion it does happen, you are fully guaranteed and it's not your money being taken anyway.

Yes keeping a pre-paid card and only topping up prior to use is possible but not as good IMO. The big advantage of the virtual credit card was that each and every transaction generated its own random unique 16digit credit card number (and 3digit security no). This means that if anyone unscrupulosuly tries to subsequently debit a second transaction to your card account using those details it won't work as the virtual card had an expiry date set for the following day (maybe 2days).

Before getting my virtual cards I had noticed two instances of companies from which I had bought something from, charging me again on the same card details anything from one to twelve months later. Luckily I noticed this on my statement and when challenged they said it was an administrative error and they refunded the charge. However, how many of these may I have missed?? Plus its an easy way for them to get a little more cash isn't it? So if I was dealing with any company I could not 'fully trust' I would use the virtual card.

Also there is the scam where people try and get you to sign up for some online service saying "Give us your credit card details and you will have the option of cancelling if you don't wish to continue with our service". Well you can read many instances of people saying how hard it is to do the cancel, and they keep getting charged for the service. Likewise with a continuous debit authority. Well the virtual card made this easy and safe - they could only charge the once. Good for dodgy web sites etc.;)

I think Virtual Cards have not been very popular as they were not advertised enough for the general public to realise their benefits. The only problem I ever had in the early days was some company's systems thought the card had already expired - I think that was cured by making sure the virtual card expired more than 24hrs ahead.

Off to find yet another provider of virtual pre paid cards..:)
