How long for a large cheque to clear in the bank?

We put a cheque from an Insurance Company into Abbey bank account 7 working days ago. Usual clearing time is 4 working days. They told us it would take a couple of additional days due to the amount which is fair enough. My husband called on Friday and they said it would clear Monday, today there is no money but they said it would clear tomorrow (Tuesday).

We was wondering whether this was usual and if they do not clear it tomorrow if there is anything we can do or say to get things moving a bit quicker as I have someone coming to do some work on our garden as we did think we would have it quicker than 8 working days.

Abbey are a law unto themselves - no other bank would regularly take longer to clear a large cheque. Apart from putting in a complaint I don't think you can really speed it up

Thanks. OK, we have never had to bank anything like this before and wanted to know whether it was the norm, Just getting a bit irritated by their 'tomorrow' attitude I guess and wanted to know if there was more we could do if we had to call again.

They said it was to be sure the cheque was not fraudulent, which I can understand, but it must have cashed through the other bank account after this long. Thank you.

It is normally 10 days for 'extended clearance' on a cheque.

  • The banking code says 2 - 4 - 6.
Interest is payable on second day after it was paid in, cleared for fate on day 4 and clear to withdraw on day 6.
They might have a rule to increase this for basic accounts.
