My suggestion is to get a cheap Ryanair flight to Venice ( Treviso ) and then head for Lido di Jesolo which is a nice beachside resort town. If they use that as a base they can easily get into Venice by bus/ boat, takes about an hour.

They will have the best of both worlds. Most hotels in Lido have a pool plus designated areas on the beach. It is much cheaper to stay there than Venice. The boat trip into Venice is lovely and relaxing.

Venice itself can be cheap if you get off the beaten track. it is a walking city and very romantic. Have a look atwww.italyheaven.co.uk/veneto/lido-di-jesolo

    Hope this helps.
