Folks, I am a recent addition to the BR family here. I was on the DFW thread under a different name for years. What I found great over there was the really cheerful side of being skint, if that makes sense .

Anyway, this board, quite rightly focuses on the technical aspects of support for BR. And for those newbies, it does seem fairly straight forward, it is the emotional side which I am struggling with. I can't get my head around the sense of "relief" that people report, I still feel absolutely gutted, sick, tearful, helpless....etc etc. But one thing that I know about myself is that this isn't really me. I am usually a positive cheerful person in the face of adversity. So I was wondering if you folks wanted to help me along by suggesting

1. "cheap and cheerful" things to do
2. Good news stories post bancruptcy (got promoted, got married, got dream house etc).
3. inspiration to see it through.

Not an exhaustive list, but all has to be positive or have a happy ending.

I will start it off. I have just started a scrap book of recipies from magazines. I used to do this years ago, and enjoyed trying out new cheap and cheerful recipies. Now that I have written this down it sounds rather lame! I am sure you can all do better.

    Hi Darnit,

Just wanted to say welcome to the board. As you say you have been a DFW for years so I guess you will know most of us already. (hmmm I`m always curious who people are!!LOL)

I am at a low ebb at the moment too....not yet BR but I am certainly not coping with the emotional side of any of this at all.

Thankyou for starting this thread....I shall look forward to some happy stories from the other bods to cheer me up too:D:D....& maybe one day I shall be able to add my own `happy ending`.

Edit - just thought under cheap & cheerful things to do....start walking in the local park/countryside etc....costs nothing, gets you fit, blows away the cobwebs & you get to meet some great people along the way !

Thanks so sad angel, I wasn't planning to hide my identity, but I can't get back in and lost all my stars! Then when I thought about it, I felt a bit silly for ending up bancrupt, because I had tried to be so positive and set myself some unrealistic goals on DFW board. I didn't want to depress the others who were following my thread by admitting to failure. So, a fresh new identity it was. I may go back and admit my previous ID when i have some good news of my own

Ref the walk, I went for a walk in the dark on Wednesday with my DD and we kicked leaves about. She wants to go every week now, and it gave us a chance to have a talk about girl stuff without distractions of TV/Games etc.

Darnit, it would seem you have already been living as frugally as was comfortable over the years?

That being the case, I would hazard a guess that your 'lifestyle' wont have changed a lot since BR??

Obviously, pre-BR you were faced with trying to service overwhelming debts...how did you feel about trying to meet the outgoings?

Your description of your emotional state actually points to a degree of relief....at least, part of your financial life has now become part of the past?

But the sudden freedom from the financial shackles, doesn't always bring a sense of elation and joy.

I sense you are the sort of person who tries to keep positive thoughts in your mind, when things are going wrong...where there seems to be no end to the agonies...?

But after BR, the woes have all gone...there isn't really anything for you to struggle against.......so I guess all the emotions you WANTED to show, pre-BR, but felt you ought not to, are now surfacing...which is ok, really.

Being BR is much the same as DFW's...but the goal has been achieved....albeit not quite in the way a lot of folk intended.

BR's still make their pennies go a long way, just like any other.....

the 'relief' you have noted, I suspect, comes from folk who perhaps haven't been able to be quite so positive pre-BR....suddenly all those burdens have been lifted, hence the 'relief?'
    inspiration to see it through.

for me, this came from finally understanding exactly what BR was all about...what it sets out to achieve for an individual.

Many post on here, patently misunderstanding BR...not the 'nuts and bolts', but it's meaning.

One thing a lot of people may find is that, whilst BR, somebody else is actually fighting their corner...something that many have not had for years....
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Alistairq, have you been listening to my brain? Very perceptive, no my life won't change post BR, as you are right, fear, and my pride was making me try and sort out my mess. But the biggest bit is that a lot of debt is to family, and although not legally bound, I feel morally bound. Also, I have a professional job, and the feelings of shame are worse. It is a secret for now (although I have informed the appropriate dept) and I will keep my job, so have to consider myself lucky.

Good thread! Happy stories? Well I have a funny one but I'm not very funny the way I tell em!

My DH was a speed freak before BR, now we have an old A-B car that we use and are actually quite happy with it. DH told me he'd managed to save nearly half a tank of petrol this week doing his work trips. He wouldn't tell me how though.

Off we went to the supermarket on Saturday, Kids in tow. "David, what are you doing?!" He's chugging along the A1 doing 50mph, so embarrassing. So I figure that's how he's saved the petrol. That was until we stopped at some traffic light " David! What are you doing?!" He turns the engine off! "Oh my god, start the blerdy car up, the battery is on it way out! It might not start!" "oh" he says " it'll be fine, I've been doing this all week" " lights go green" .. *empty engine noise* and again, and again! The car wouldn't start, we looked at each other, started to crease in laughter all the while the folks behind getting rather impatient. I, me, little prissy princess, have to get out the car and push it to jump start it. So funny, so cringe worthy and so embarrassing but a real hoot that cheered us up for the rest of the day.

So bankruptcy has shown us how to save £20 worth of petrol only to have to spend it next month on a new battery!

hi.....noticed this quote on another, vey different forum..
We would worry less about what others think of us if we realized how seldom they do.
