Moneybookers.com

Beware that certain credit/debit card payment processing companies - such as moneybookers.com - do not do name or address checks when processing credit and debit cards!!!

Someone used my credit card on two occasions, using a different name and address on those two occasions. Neither the names nor addresses used correspond in any way to my name and address. I have learned by contacting the merchants that they had other fraudulent transactions on the same day. It appears to be an international fraud as both transactions were in euros with two Dutch companies but the delivery addresses were in Scotland and England.

Moneybookers.com have confirmed that they do not check names or addresses in credit/debit card transactions. They also confirm that they do not use the verification systems that VISA and MasterCard have, such as VERIFIED by VISA and MasterCard SecureCode.

Given that moneybookers.com has over 9 million clients, that appears to be a serious failing to me!

this depends on a credit card provider and not on moneybookers, so if you are concerned about security, you should consider changing your credit cards to the ones that offer VERIFIED by VISA and MasterCard SecureCode facility.

this is not exactly true. moneybookers will not allow you to use a new credit card for payment unless you verify it first, and the verification process can only be done by you.

Lloyds TSB text me every time I use my debit card abroad to make sure it's me. Used Moneybookers last night and within seconds had a text from them asking to call if it was fraudulent.

I am sorry, but I was very careful in what I wrote! My credit card that was used in a fraudulent transaction is a VISA card and I am signed up with Verified by Visa with that card. My card issuer has told me that it is up to the payment processor to implement Verified by Visa or not. Moneybbokers.com have confirmed that they do not use Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode ony card transactions!

I asked my card company not to process transactions if my card is not passed through the Verified by Visa process. but they cannot stop transactions where the Verified by Visa process is not used. Similarly, my card issuer cannot stop transactions where my name and address has not been verified.

Of course this means that the payment processor can be held liable (rather than the card issuer) and moneybookers has refunded the money to my card issuer for this transaction. I think, ultimately, it is the merchant's responsibility to ensure checks are done so moneybookers should get the money back from the fraudulent website - assuming they really know who they are!
