Gap in no-claims discount - can it still be used?

Hi all,

Hope someone who knows a bit more than me about insurance can help with this, any thoughts gratefully appreciated!

OH has 2 years no claims bonus on his car insurance. It's up for renewal tomorrow and we've found a really cheap quote from a classic car insurance company. We were really surprised that this came up, as his car is only 11 years old and not something we'd have thought of as a 'classic' (R-reg Mk3 Golf GTI) - but after we phoned to check and they said it was fine! As long as he doesn't do over 5,000 miles a year, which he won't as we're moving house right next to his workplace, so it's only for leisure/weekends. So far so good.

The only snag is that apparently you don't accrue any no claims discount on a classic car policy? So I'm a bit worried about how it will affect next year's insurance. Obviously he won't get any NCB if he doesn't claim this year, but what about last year and the year before. When he comes to renew next year, will his 2 years NCB from this year and last still count? Or will it be treated like he has 0 years NCB?

Many thanks in advance!

  • Hi there that is correct on not accruing any ncd on a classic car policy. From my experience the premium may stay around the same when due for renewal but they will advise better...

As for the no claims bonus you usually have 2 years from when your last policy ran out/cancelled but there are 1 or 2 insurers will let you use them upto 3 years.
I like to think I can help but its for discussion purposes only so if I get it wrong please feel free to correct me.
