My wife and i have recently moved into a flat. We are renting privately through an estate agent. Gas is through b/gas using a card and elec is through s/power ON A KEY. Both are proving to be expensive. What i want to know is can we change suppliers without much cost but still using prepayment meters if we can, and who are the cheapest suppliers of gas/elec using meters and keys. At the moment we use for both gas and elctric about £40-£50 a month!! So pretty expensive and bear in mind that these meters were here before we moved in, many thanx mse's

It depends really on how much you will use in a year. £40-£50 a month now is not an indication of costs when winter sets in.

Ebico are probably best for gas for most pre-pay users.

You really need to enter estimated kWh into a comparison network.

    Hiya

Re your post, you can check your key meter yourself to find out how much kwh's you've used etc, all you have to do is, take a pen and piece of paper and press the blue button in and out on your meter, this will go to several screens on your meter. this is what the screens mean:-

A - how much credit is in your meter
B - if you have used the emergency credit, this will tell you how much to top up your meter by.
E - How much money you have credited your meter with
F - how much you are paying for standing charges
G - how much kwh's you have used
    H - same as G
I - is your price per unit of electricity

And if you have the key in your meter, you can access screens R, S and T:-

    R - emergency credit
S - (if you have a debt - how much is outstanding)
T - (if you have a debt - how much you are repaying it per week)

In regards to gas - im unsure as to what british gas price per unit is - however on a prepayment meter for the gas with scottishpower - it is 3 pence per unit and the standing charge is 74 pence per week.

If you require any further info, let me know.

    Cheers
    Dee x;)

ebico are good for gas, 3.675 pence per kwh used (or 41p per unit used on a metric gas meter)
i.e last week my gas meter reading increased by 10 units, so cost £4.10 pence.

ebicos billing is easy to work out as its charged at rate.
