Electrical socket making humming noise

....rather than getting an electrician out.

I noticed one of the electrical sockets in my living room makes a humming noise when on.

To save me money on electricians, could someone please tell me why this socket is making this humming noise.

thank you

It is probably a loose or poor connection in the socket.

At the very least you need a new socket.

Sooner rather than later. It is a potential fire risk.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

..but surely then it would be in the bathroom ...which would just be taking the P ....part p!:rotfl:

What are you connecting to it? If it's not a standard plug your connecting to it but a small but fairly heavy block type of plug with transformer built in (or something like a phone charger) these can make a buzzing sound.

I assume the OP had nothing plugged into it, other wise you would of thought they would of unplugged it to eliminate the noise etc

If it was me i would turn all the power off, remove the socket and isolate the wires using chocolate block, if the buzzing goes its the socket, fit a new one in reverse of removal, if it still buzzes you have a serious issue

Long and short of it is (and not intending to be rude) is get someone to look at it as you dont sound too confident

I am not an electrician, so would it be an expensive job if I called an electrician out to do it?

I had a four gang extension lead plugged into the socket. I just tried it again today, but could not hear the hum. When I heard the humming it was night time, so much quieter. I had a fan, a stereo and a lamp plugged into the four gang extension.

When you say a serious issue, can you give me an idea of what you mean please? Is my flat likely to blow up?
    What is chocolate block?
I am not confident with electrics.

    thank you

It is not a big job to change a socket, about 30 Min's I should imagine.

It should be safe enough if you do not use it

I had an electrician come and change the socket. Their was dirt in the socket breaking the connection. Very reasaonably priced electrician, also did some other small jobs while here.
