Credit Card Companies !!!! Up

Hi,

Our Credit Card company cocked up our account and have now reopened the account which had been closed and are asking for the money back, are they within their rights?

We used a new 0% credit card to balance transfer about £750 from another card. This amount was paid to the old card company but never showed up on the new card. We continued to use the new card for about a year, then closed the account. A month after this we recieved a call explaining that they are automatically re-opening the account with a £750 balance on it.

Can they do this? I know it is not really our money, but we never really noticed it hadn't gone on to the new card along with all the other transactions on it and now we have a credit card account we don't want and can't afford to pay it now.

Any thoughts?

    Welcome to MSE!

Cancellation of a credit card does not mean you are no longer liable for transactions which you authorised before closure.

May I ask which credit cards are involved?

  • Hi moggles,

Thanks for your reply, we can't remember who the account we paid off was, but the new card which has now been reopened, is Paypal

No experience of Paypal personally, but if you would prefer to spread the repayments, your best bet is to apply for a new 0% balance transfer card.

Which deal is best depends, to some extent, on which cards you have at the mo or have held recently. If you cannot remember, a credit file lists all your previous providers at the end of the report. For help, see page 1 of the *How to obtain credit reports* sticky.

To maximise the 0% period, 16 months is currently available from Virgin on BTs made in the first 60 days. A 2.98% transfer fee applies ;)
