What Am I Doing Wrong?

I maybe wrong but I think the only way promoters would be able to see where entries for their competitions have come from is by using a traffic stats program. The likes of statcounter etc. And these only show ip addresses
If they are getting hundreds, possibly thousands of entries for a competition I dont think they are likely to trawl through all their traffic stats and eliminate those that have came to the competition page through mse forums. Unless when they pick a winnner they somehow check the winners ip address and match it to the ip address on there traffic counter and if they find they clicked through mse then decide to pick another winner. I would think its too much of a hassle for promoters to monitor where all there entries have come from. Unless they ask on the entry form where you heard about the competition, I always say through a friend
Any decent website will have referral stats on their server control panel anyway.
I agree that most corporate websites (particularly the more mainstream sites like radio stations, tv shows, newspapers and magazines) are really unlikely to even pay any attention where the visitor came from. Besides sites like that would have scripts and software to manage the entries. It's not like an individual is going to sit there sifting through 5,000+ competition entries!!!! Think about the ITV comps as an example. They automatically tell you when you have entered more than 5 times.
I'm thinking hiding your referral information is more relevant for the more specialised, niche and small business websites (take a look at this thread to see what I mean)!:T*Thanks to all who posts comps * :j0 -

Some good tips here, I'm new to the world of comps but fancy giving it a go.0

I have almost always used links on this site and went on to buy something from the site that's doing the competition. Since entering the comps here i have come across loads of interesting sites that i now buy regularly from. I first started about a year and a half ago, used to spend hours on end entering comps and won a good few prizes(nothing huge). I now enter much less than i used to and hardly win anything so i think that entering more will help. I have also noticed that there's more ppl entering now than there used to be over a year ago. Perhaps something to do with the recession? More ppl have lost jobs and have much more time on their hands to enter. Just enter as many comps as you can and hopefully your time for winning something good will come. I'm still waiting on a biggie and i look forward to the day that comes.
E.I.J.O.Q.U.X.Y.Z:staradmin You gotta be in it to win it! :staradmin0 -
I have been comping for over a year and haven't had a big win yet, but have started to pick up a few little ones recently. Stick with it, I've got my fingers crossed that I will have a big win soon, then once I do I'll be crossing my fingers for you xxPrizes:
2013 - £3,500; 2014 - £8,200; 2015 - £9,300; 2016 - £6,500; 2017 - £9,500; 2018 - £1,600; 2019 - £2,100; 2020 - £2360!
Thanks for everyone's help getting these xx0 -
I would say I agree with the wins getting less frequent since comping was mentioned on the MSE e-mail. I think it's a case of more people entering at the moment.0
