  • Just thinking of making our xmas cake, tried once before was a disaster. I;ve got a new cooker now with a fan oven so going to try again. Using Delia Smith recipe, however just realised need brown paper, does anybody have any alternative's to this such as greaseproof, as I have no brown paper and really don't want to have to buy anything else. Somewhere in the back of my mind newspaper keeps coming up, but I might be getting confused with something else. My mother in law used to make our cake, but sadly passed away last month. Any advice/help appreciated

Newspaper is a possible replacement. It's for wrapping around the tin so that the cake doesn't get scorched.

Thanks for the reply re newspaper, I was a bit worried about the lead in the print. The ingredients work out quite expensive so dont wont to ruin the cake, it's only my second attempt at xmas cake the first one was a mess, had to throw it out but that was a few years ago now. No other preparations for xmas done I really want to be organised this year. I am determined that everything will be done well in advance so i can enjoy xmas instead of running around at the at the last minute.

This is going to be our first christmas in our OWN house - - i have just made my christmas cake instead of buying it, it smells good used the nigel slater recipe and my tin was a bit smaller than specified so i have a 7" round cake and a loaf cake out of the mixture- smells delish

also want to make xmas pudding this year as they are very expensive (well i always buy the posh ones which are expensive)

dinner i still want a free range turkey, dont want to compromise on that, but i am going to try and not go mad on the extras...

i'll make mince pies and sausage rolls.. jobs a goodun!!

how are you all doing with your xmas prep? :xmastree:

Wow, you are organised! Well done! and well done with buying your own place too - it'll be a very special Xmas :T

I like to bake for Christmas too and do a big Xmas clean as well so I can relax for couple of weeks...

A friend of mine told me (jokingly of course ;))to "dip a sock in Dettol and chuck it under the sofa and put wee bit of cinnamon on a baking tray and chuck it in the hot oven for five minutes and that way your house smells Christmassy and clean without too much hassle" :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

.......Want to make a pud too - anyone got a receipe? is it poss to make lots of little ones? What would I put them in?
    ........

Just a thought - sometimes in the charity shops, you come across those 'pyrex teacups' (brown/amber in colour) that everybody had about 25 years ago. Would something like one of those be a good size for an individual steamed pud?
  • Surely the cakes and puddings will go off by Christmas Day??? It's still two months away.

They should be made by bonfire night I believe, then they get fed alcohol on a weekly basis which would kill off any germs stupid enough to try and get near them!

Line the tin with baking paper, as you would normally do.
Then wrap the newspaper outside the tin, and/or inside the tin but outside the baking paper. edit: Remember to put it on the bottom of the tin too!
The newspaper never touches the cake ;)
  • Thanks, for newspaper reply, just come back from MrM with brandy and black treacle now ready to go, going to leave fruit soaking overnight and have a bash tomorow. thanks once again, getting excited now, hope it works. One thing for sure if it comes out wrong it will now be turned into something else the mse way:T
