Aldi 160Gb Internal Hard Drive

Comments

  • The Sky+ box reportedly suffers from the 137Gb limit too. Apparently it will screw up if you write past the 137Gb limit.

What happens if you fill the drive, does it work OK or does it crash? Have you got that far yet?

    (just curious)

I HAVE THIS DRIVE... FROM ALDI TOO!

It is indeed the Samsung someone quoted earlier. I have had 0 problems with it so far (you watch, now i've said that) and I would heartily recommend it, and that's not a phrase I use often! Buy it! If you can get it cheaper that's even more amazing but I have had no problems with this drive. I saw it a while back in aldi, rang a mate in the know, bought it thinking if i didn't like the look i could take it back and have kept it ever since...

    just my own experience....

Buyers of drives bigger than 137Gb should be advised that some versions of Windows will not see large drives without 48 bit LBA Support

    See
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303013 for Windows XP

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305098/EN-US/ for Windows 2000

and for 98 and ME see
    http://www.48bitlba.com/win98.htm

This is important since setting up the drive may prove impossible and buyers complaining to Aldi (etc) that the drive is not full size.

    :-/

You can resolve this easily by installing a Raid PCI Card ....i bought one from maplin as it only costs 19.99 and is almost next door!   pcexpensiveworld are 59.99!

  • Thanks hintza, I have been waiting for them to reduce it, was £69 last Fri around here, hope it's a nationwide reduction.

I have been going cross eyed flipping between Aldi and the PCW, watch this space for stock, as it is the same Samsung drive, only the box says Gericom, it is 2meg cache as opposed to the usual 8M.

I was beginning to think PCW was going to be selling Aldi's old unsold stock. ::) especially as they had Medion LCD's cheap last week.

Off to Aldi tomorrow, thanks agin, Scat ;)

It will be ok for the Humax too :D
    Moi....? ;)

is it as easy at that? ie just buy any higher capacity hard drive and stick it into a regular sky+ box? what about compatibility issues?

This was the best thing I have done in a very long time.
Ordered from simply a Maxtor 160gb hard drive for £55.00 and followed the steps shown in the hummer website. Perfection!

If anyone wants a home for the old 40GB's their pulling out of the Sky+ boxes I'll cover the P&P and throw in a drink ;D
  • Had a look in the storagereview.com survey, the drive does very well in the reliability survey's (given its a Samsung P80) so for £50 its definately a good buy.
  • If anyone wants a home for the old 40GB's their pulling out of the Sky+ boxes I'll cover the P&P and throw in a drink

Hell, at that price I'll pay 20p more and throw him "in the drink"

    :D:D:D
